Menxis
Ever since cancer has been found to be affecting the crew of Space Station 13, it is the job of the Oncologist (or any Medical Doctor when absent) to diagnose and treat cancer and cancer related symptoms. There is an Oncology Room situated between the Paramedic Room and Genetics, and East of Medbay Storage containing basic supplies should you have a patient diagnosed with cancer
Note that even when treated through the Oncology Room, tumors won't just magically disappear from your victim patient's body. Regular procedure involves butchering them and cloning them Surgery
Oncology for Dummies
You would think that in the year 20XX, when cloning and genetic engineering have become as easy as pushing a few buttons on a fancy machine, cancer would no longer plague the station
Think again
First and foremost, cancer must be correctly diagnosed. Wouldn't want to waste your precious cancer cure on someone with a scar, or ruin their lives
Diagnosing cancer
Usually, cancer only occurs when a crewman is being affected by severe amount of toxins damage in a short span of time. This should usually not happen outside of freak accidents will cause bodies and dying crewmen to pile up outside of the Oncology Room by the time Medbay is about set
Note that cancer will usually be caused by extreme amounts of radiation, genetic defects, direct injection of Toxins or Radium into the body, radiation-based weaponry and direct inhalation of Toxins
Once cancer happens, the patient will take steady toxin and clone damage. Clone damage is especially bad since it doesn't heal by itself and can only be fixed with Cryo
First-hand signs
- The patient will mention a tingling sensation in a certain part of their body
- Perhaps even some bloating where there was usually none before
- The patient will cough very often, this is a very telltale sign
Advanced Diagnosis
- The patient will be in critical condition due to
forgetting about the fact cancer existsmetastatic activity from the main tumorous mass, or they will be in bad condition from the toxic and clone damage - The Medical Scanner will usually indicate cancer, and presence of foreign bodies in most limbs when seen through the Body Scanner will usually confirm it
Treating cancer
- First of all, cancer victims will rarely be your only patient. Use some Triage and consider that cancer victims might die quickly (especially if they are at the later stages of the disease, when it evolves quickly) but not as quickly as critical or bleeding patients
- If the patient is dead, just clone him. He'll be all nice and new and without tumors, until he fucks up again
- Go to the Oncology Room (or contact any available Oncologist) and use the IV drip to administer the IV bags, which should contain Phalanximine. It will induce radiation and toxin damage, so you will need to administer the patient a constant flow of Dylovene, also known as Anti-Toxin. Once radiation levels are above 50 % and toxins are controlled, the disease will slowly heal
- Should the IV bags be empty or unavailable, contact the Chemist and ask him for 30 units of Phalanximine and a fair amount of Anti-Toxin
- Put the patient in the Advanced Body Scanner and look for all Non Identified Foreign Bodies inside him. Remember that all Security and Command personnel have loyalty implants inside their head, other than the Chief Engineer and Chief Medical Officer
- Perform Implant Removal Surgery now that the tumors are under control and localized
The ride never ends
